Printing, Copying, Scanning and Emailing Documents at University College Birmingham
The below guides explain how you can use University College Birmingham printers and how to access the Print Portal, including adding credit and printing from personal devices.
How much does it cost to print?
Staff are able to print at no cost.
Students are assigned £5 credit at the start of every academic year whilst studying at University College Birmingham.
Printing Costs
- A4 black and white (1p per side)
- A4 Colour (5p per side)
- A3 Black and white (2p per side)
- A3 Colour (10p per side)
To view your print credit balance, transactions, configure mobile printing and top up your credit, you can use the Print Portal and, if prompted, sign in with your university student ID (e.g. ABC1234567) and password.
A shortcut to the Print Portal is available on the desktop of all University PC’s.

How to send your files to print from any University student computers
When you send your document(s) to print, send them to the "UCB-Printer".
By default, your documents will print double-sided and in Black & White. When you send documents to print, they are queued and can be released and printed when signing into any printer at the University College.
To print in colour, click on Printer Properties, then change the Colour Mode as shown below.
To change the paper size, you can select from either A4 or A3. You can also choose stapler settings if a stapler is available at your location.
Printer sign-in process
1) Login with your ID card
- Hold your ID card to the contactless reader on the machine
- The first time you use your ID card on the printer, hold it against the reader until it beeps, then enter your username and computer password and click Associate card to register your card
2) Login with Network Credentials
- Select Username and Password and then press Username on the touch-screen and sign in with your University student ID (e.g. ABC1234567)
- Press Password on the touch-screen and enter your computer password
- Press OK and Log In
How to Print
- To release all your queued documents, press Print All
- To release specific documents, press the Print Release icon and select the documents you wish to print, then press Print
How to Copy
- To copy a document, press Copy until you reach the copy options screen as per below, then press the green Start button
How to Scan
- To scan a document, press Scan
- Select the scan option you require
- Adjust your scan options if needed using the Settings button
